NOvae choir Policies

  • All are welcome

Students in grades 3 through 8 are welcome to join the choir. No prior experience is expected, though students with more music training have a place here as well. During the first rehearsal, we will listen to each student to assess their individual musical strengths and needs. Breakout groups will be created to accommodate different levels of musicianship. There will be opportunities to solo if the student is interested.

  • open rehearsal

Caregivers are welcome to observe the rehearsal, if their presence is not distracting to the students. Observing caregivers must sit in the back of the room and not interrupt the rehearsal. Though we love little children, siblings that are not ready to sit and listen or play quietly are not allowed to be in the rehearsal room.

  • tuition & cancellation policy

Tuition is $400 for each session. Tuition is for the entire session and must be paid in full before the second rehearsal. Tuition includes instruction, use of music and lesson book, supplies, and a t-shirt (students keep their t-shirts!). Scholarships are available; please contact us. You may cancel your registration up until 5pm on the Tuesday following the second rehearsal for a partial refund (tuition minus the cost of the book, t-shirt, and first class). After that time, no refunds can be granted.

  • behavior

Kind, respectful behavior is expected of all students, teachers, and caregivers. Students who become disruptive of the rehearsal will first receive a warning, second be asked to step outside with our assistant to take a break, third have their caregivers called to bring the student home for the day. If this behavior continues for more than two rehearsals, the student may be asked to sit out the rest of the session. Please arrive on time for every rehearsal and promptly pick-up your student at the scheduled release time. Though we will not leave your student alone, we do not provide childcare before or after the scheduled rehearsal time.

  • Attendance

Rehearsals are every Monday from 4:15 to 5:45. The dress rehearsal and final performance have extended hours. Please see the session calendar for exact dates and times. It is expected that students attend every rehearsal. If a student must miss a rehearsal, please let us know via email prior to that rehearsal; 24 hours notice is preferred, though we understand that same-day illness can occur.

  • Health and Safety

Because we are a community of singers and our staff depends on their vocal health to work, we are extremely conscientious about health policies. We ask that students follow the vaccination guidelines established by the CDPH. If your child is sick, please do not bring them to rehearsal. This includes persistent cough, runny nose, fever, headache, and any other symptoms. If your child is on the mend but still has very minor symptoms, they can attend rehearsal with a tight-fitting mask. If they have been in close contact with someone who is sick, please send them with a mask. In general, masks are optional but completely welcome.

  • We love our teachers

Please be respectful of our teachers and the decisions they make. With a high level of training and experience, our teachers have selected repertoire that is appropriate for the level and understanding of the students. Their approach to all aspects of the rehearsal, including vocal technique, musicianship, and repertoire is based on extensive preparation and expertise. We have your student’s interests at heart and will always strive to do our best. If you have any concerns regarding the teachers’ methods or selections, or your student’s progress and experience, please request a conference by email.

  • Recording and Social Media

Cameras and recording equipment are not permitted during rehearsals and performances because it is distracting to the performers, the directors, and others in the audience. We also want to stress the importance of complying with provisions of laws that protect rights of the composers and publishers of the music we perform. We will record the final performance and have the recording available to you on our website. We will also periodically take photos and videos to share on social media to inform parents and to promote the program. Every family has the right to opt out. In respect of these families, please refrain from taking and sharing unauthorized photos and videos of any student who is not your child.

  • LCCC Affiliation

LWPA is associated and supported by La Cañada Congregational Church. We intend to be an inclusive and diverse organization that welcomes, cherishes, and affirms all individuals in our community regardless of race, culture, age, gender identity, gender expression, LGBTQIA+ identity, ability, socio-economic status, or religion. Teaching content, repertoire, and events will be planned accordingly. Though Novae is not a religious-based choir, some repertoire with religious texts may be selected due to their importance in music history.
